Description

The Crossroads of Israel's Early History

The central hill country of Israel served as the stage for countless Bible events. Shiloh was Israel's main worship center for centuries and the home of the Ark of the Covenant before its capture by the Philistines. Nearby, Samuel grew up under Eli and later traveled these hills as Israel's last judge and first great prophet.

The same region includes Gibeah, the hometown of King Saul, along with Ramah, where Samuel lived, and Michmash, where Jonathan's daring attack turned the tide against the Philistines. Bethel, Ai, Gibeon, Shechem, Mount Gerizim, and Mount Ebal each played major roles throughout the books of Joshua, Judges, Samuel, and Kings, while Jerusalem eventually became Israel's capital under David.

Seeing these locations together helps readers appreciate how many familiar Bible stories happened in the same landscape. The mountains, valleys, and ridges influenced travel, warfare, worship, and daily life, making this region the political and spiritual heart of ancient Israel for generations.
