After the Flood, Noah's family began the process of rebuilding human life. But Genesis soon tells another troubling story involving Noah, his sons, and his grandson Canaan. After an incident inside Noah's tent, Noah pronounced a curse connected specifically with Canaan, saying that he would become a servant to his relatives.
The story is often misunderstood because Canaan was Noah's grandson, not one of Noah's sons. Canaan was the son of Ham, and his descendants became associated with the land later known as Canaan.
Geographically, Canaan occupied a strategically important stretch of land between Egypt and the great civilizations of Mesopotamia. It included the region along the Mediterranean coast and the hill country surrounding places such as Jerusalem, Hebron, Bethel, and Beersheba. Major travel routes passed through this narrow land, connecting Africa, Asia, and the ancient Near East.
The importance of Canaan grows throughout the Bible. Generations after Noah, God promised this same land to Abraham and his descendants. Understanding where Canaan was located helps connect one of Genesis's earliest family stories with the land that would later become the center of Israel's history.
