After God brought Israel out of Egypt, he gave Moses detailed instructions for worship. Sacrifices became an important part of that system, with priests offering bulls, rams, lambs, and goats according to specific instructions. Some offerings were completely burned, while others were connected with sin offerings and priestly meals.
The number and type of animals depended on the occasion. Israelites brought regular offerings every morning and evening, with additional sacrifices on the Sabbath and at the monthly new moon. Major festivals required even more offerings as the nation gathered to worship.
The yearly calendar included Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the harvest festivals, the autumn Trumpet Festival, the Day of Atonement, and the Festival of Shelters. The Festival of Shelters was especially demanding, with large numbers of bulls, rams, lambs, and goats offered over several days.
These sacrifices were more than a list of religious rules. They were part of Israel’s covenant relationship with God and provided ways for the people to worship, celebrate, seek forgiveness, and mark important moments throughout the year. Understanding the pattern of these offerings helps explain the worship system described throughout the books of Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers.
