Judah Faces a Million-Man Army
King Asa of Judah faced an enormous army that had marched up from the south and invaded his kingdom. This map follows the Ethiopian army into Judah and shows how Asa’s forces met them near Mareshah in the Valley of Zephathah.
Description
Asa’s Victory at Zephathah Valley
During the reign of King Asa, an Ethiopian army led by Zerah invaded Judah. The army came north from the region south of Egypt, possibly encouraged by Judah’s enemies, and moved toward the heart of the kingdom. Asa gathered his forces and met them near Mareshah in the Valley of Zephathah.
The geography helps make the battle easier to understand. The Ethiopian army advanced through the southern part of Judah near Beersheba and Gerar before reaching the area around Mareshah and Lachish. From there, Asa’s army engaged the invaders and drove them back toward Gerar. The map highlights the route of the invasion and the direction of Judah’s counterattack.
According to 2 Chronicles 14, Asa called on God for help before the battle, and Judah defeated the much larger army. The Ethiopian forces fled, and Asa’s soldiers pursued them as far as Gerar. The victory protected Judah from a powerful invasion and became one of the defining military victories of Asa’s reign.
