Description

The Battle of Tekoa

When Jehoshaphat learned that a large coalition was invading Judah, he called the people together and sought God’s help. The invading armies came up from the area east and southeast of the Dead Sea, climbing from the lowlands toward the hill country of Judah. Their route brought them past En-gedi and toward the wilderness of Tekoa.

The geography helps explain the dramatic change in elevation. The Dead Sea lies more than 1,000 feet below sea level, while Tekoa sits high in the hill country. The invading armies had to climb roughly 3,400 feet as they moved toward Judah. The map highlights this difficult route through the wilderness and the Ziz hill before reaching the area around Tekoa.

According to 2 Chronicles 20, Judah did not have to fight the invading army. God caused the forces of Moab, Ammon, and Mount Seir to turn against one another until they destroyed each other. When Judah’s army reached the battlefield, the enemy soldiers were already dead. The victory became a powerful example of Jehoshaphat’s trust in God and a remarkable moment in Judah’s history.
