The Last Battle of Israel's First King
As the Philistine army gathered at Shunem in the Jezreel Valley, Saul realized Israel faced overwhelming odds. Unable to receive guidance from God, he secretly traveled to Endor and asked a medium to summon the prophet Samuel. Samuel's message was devastating: by the next day, Saul and his sons would die in battle.
The prophecy came true on the slopes of Mount Gilboa. The Philistines overwhelmed Israel's army, killing Jonathan and Saul's other sons. Badly wounded and unwilling to be captured, Saul fell on his own sword. After the battle, the Philistines displayed the bodies of Saul and his sons on the walls of Beth-shan until brave men from Jabesh-gilead later recovered them for burial.
The geography helps explain every stage of the story. The broad Jezreel Valley gave the Philistines room to use their military strength, while Mount Gilboa became Israel's last defensive position. Seeing Shunem, Endor, Beth-shan, and Mount Gilboa together reveals how Saul's final campaign unfolded and marks the dramatic transition from Saul's reign to the rise of King David.
