Description

The Battle at Mount Zemaraim

Abijah became king of Judah while Jeroboam ruled the northern kingdom of Israel. Their conflict reached a dramatic point when the two armies faced each other in the hill country of Ephraim. According to 2 Chronicles 13, Judah was heavily outnumbered, but Abijah called on God for help and Judah won the battle.

The geography makes the story easier to picture. Abijah's army moved north from Jerusalem through the territory of Benjamin toward Mount Zemaraim, while Israel's forces gathered in the hill country. Places such as Bethel, Ephraim, Michmash, Shiloh, and Shechem help show the rugged landscape where the kingdoms met.

The battle was more than a clash between neighboring armies. It was part of the continuing struggle between the two kingdoms after Israel split from Judah. The map highlights how close the rival kingdoms were and how easily their borders could become battlefields. For Judah, the victory at Mount Zemaraim became a major military success during the early years of the divided kingdom.
