In 722 BC, the powerful Assyrian Empire conquered the northern kingdom of Israel and captured its capital, Samaria. Many Israelites were deported, and Assyria reorganized the conquered territory into provinces ruled by governors loyal to the emperor. This marked the end of the northern kingdom as an independent nation.
Although Judah remained independent for a time, it became a vassal state that paid tribute to Assyria. Kings in Jerusalem were allowed to rule, but only as long as they remained loyal to the empire. Prophets such as Isaiah warned Judah not to rely on political alliances but to trust God instead.
The geography highlights Assyria's strategy. The fertile regions of Samaria, Megiddo, Gilead, and Damascus became valuable provinces that secured major trade routes stretching from Egypt to Mesopotamia.
