The Ark's journey to the City of David
This map traces the final leg of the Ark of the Covenant's travels. After the Philistines captured the Ark and later returned it, it eventually came to rest at Kiriath-jearim, where it remained for about twenty years during the reigns of Samuel and Saul. Once David established Jerusalem as Israel's capital, he organized a procession to bring the Ark about 8 miles (13 km) from Kiriath-jearim to the City of David.
The journey was not without tragedy. At first, the Ark was carried on a cart instead of by Levites as God's law required. When Uzzah reached out to steady it, he died, and David temporarily halted the procession. After learning the proper way to transport the Ark, David completed the journey with joyful worship, sacrifices, music, and dancing before the Lord.
The geography reveals why this moment mattered. By placing the Ark in Jerusalem, David united Israel's political leadership and religious worship in one city. That decision prepared the way for Solomon to build the Temple on nearby Mount Moriah, making Jerusalem the center of Israel's worship for centuries.
