Egypt's Narrow World Along the Nile

For thousands of years, the Nile River made life possible in Egypt. Its waters provided drinking water, transportation, and fertile soil for growing crops. While Egypt covered a large area on the map, most Egyptians lived in the narrow green valley and broad delta created by the river.

This was the Egypt encountered by many people in the Bible. Abraham traveled there during a famine, Joseph rose to power there, and generations of Israelites eventually lived in the fertile eastern part of the Nile Delta. Cities such as Memphis, Rameses, Zoan, and Pithom were part of the world connected to Egypt's long relationship with Israel.

The geography explains why the Nile mattered so much. To the west lay the Western Desert, while the Eastern Desert and the Sinai Peninsula stretched across the dry lands to the east. The Nile created a long, narrow corridor of fertile land running north toward the Mediterranean Sea, ending in the wide and productive Nile River Delta.

Understanding Egypt's geography helps bring the Bible's stories into focus. Egypt was powerful and wealthy, but much of its population depended on one extraordinary river. This narrow strip of green surrounded by desert became the setting for some of the Bible's most important stories, including Joseph's rise to power and Israel's Exodus from Egypt.
