Amos’s Journey from Tekoa to Israel

Amos came from Tekoa, a town south of Jerusalem in the territory of Judah. Although he was not a professional prophet, God called him to leave his farm and speak to the northern kingdom of Israel. The map traces his possible route north through places such as Jerusalem and Bethel toward Samaria, the capital of Israel.

The geography helps explain the journey Amos made. Tekoa was in the hill country of Judah, while Samaria stood farther north in the central highlands of Israel. Along the way were important places such as Jerusalem, Bethel, Shiloh, Shechem, and Mount Gerizim. The map also shows Dan in the far north and the surrounding territories of Aram and Ammon, placing Amos’s message within the larger political world of the eighth century BC.

Amos warned that Israel could not continue exploiting the poor and ignoring God’s commands without consequences. His message was especially striking because he came from outside the northern kingdom. Seeing his journey on a map makes the story more vivid: a farmer from a small town in Judah traveled into Israel’s heartland to deliver a warning that the nation’s prosperity could not protect it from judgment.
