He remained there for several years before returning to Jerusalem. Although he was welcomed back, resentment continued to grow until Absalom launched a rebellion and declared himself king.
To avoid turning Jerusalem into a battlefield, David fled across the Jordan River with his supporters. Along the way he endured insults, hardship, and uncertainty while Absalom entered the capital. The conflict ended in the forests of Gilead, where Absalom's long hair became tangled in the branches of a tree, leaving him helpless until Joab killed him. David regained his throne, but the victory came at the heartbreaking cost of losing his son.
