God called Abraham to leave his homeland and travel to a land he had never seen. Abraham and his family first moved from Ur, in southern Mesopotamia, to Haran in northern Syria, where they lived for many years. At age seventy-five, Abraham obeyed God’s call and continued southwest into Canaan, eventually settling near Hebron.
The geography helps explain the journey. Direct travel across the Arabian Desert would have been difficult and dangerous, so ancient travelers followed the fertile lands between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers before turning west toward Damascus and Canaan. This route, known today as the Fertile Crescent, became a major pathway for merchants, armies, and migrating families.
Abraham’s journey marks the beginning of one of the Bible’s central stories. God’s promises of land, descendants, and blessing began with this long walk of faith. Understanding the distances and landscapes involved helps readers appreciate the courage required for Abraham to leave everything familiar and trust God’s direction.
