From Ur to Haran—and Eventually to Canaan
Abraham's story began in the ancient world of Mesopotamia. Genesis says that his father Terah took Abraham and other members of the family from Ur, intending to travel to the land of Canaan. Their journey carried them northwest through the region between the great rivers of Mesopotamia.
But the family never reached Canaan. Instead, they stopped and settled in Haran, a major city located far to the north. Genesis does not explain exactly why they stopped there, but Haran became an important turning point in Abraham's story.
The geography helps explain the route. Traveling directly across the desert toward Canaan would have been difficult, so ancient travelers often followed the Fertile Crescent, moving along regions with water, pastureland, and established settlements. The route from Ur toward Haran followed this great arc through Mesopotamia.
After Terah died in Haran, God called Abraham to continue the journey. Abraham eventually traveled south into Canaan, beginning the story of the family that would become the people of Israel. This map shows that Abraham's journey to the Promised Land was not one simple trip—it began with his family, paused in Haran, and continued with a calling that changed biblical history.
