From Beersheba to Haran—and Back Again
Isaac was now old enough to marry, but Abraham did not want him to marry a woman from the surrounding Canaanite peoples. Instead, Abraham sent his trusted servant on a long journey to the region where Abraham's relatives lived. The servant traveled north from Abraham's camp near Beersheba, through Canaan and Syria, toward Haran.
The map helps put the story in perspective. Haran was roughly 500 miles (800 km) from Beersheba, making this a major journey in the ancient world. The route passed through places such as Hebron, Jerusalem, Damascus, Hamat, Aleppo, and Carchemish before reaching Haran. After finding Rebekah, the servant made the long trip back to Canaan with her.
Geography makes the story feel more real. Abraham was asking his servant to leave the familiar surroundings of Canaan and travel far north to find a wife for Isaac among Abraham's extended family. The journey also shows how connected the ancient world was through established travel routes despite the enormous distances.
