Abraham Stayed in Canaan While Lot Chose the Jordan Valley
In Genesis 13, Abraham and his nephew Lot had become so wealthy in livestock that their herdsmen began arguing over pastureland. Rather than fight, Abraham generously gave Lot the first choice of where to live. Lot looked toward the fertile Jordan River Valley and chose the land near the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.
Abraham stayed in the land of Canaan, west of the Jordan River. The geography helps explain Lot's decision: the Jordan Valley was known for its water and fertile land, while the higher country of Canaan offered a very different landscape. The Dead Sea, Jordan River Valley, and surrounding highlands made this region a natural dividing point between the two men.
The choice mattered far beyond finding good grazing land. Lot's decision eventually brought him close to Sodom, while Abraham remained in Canaan—the land God had promised to give to him and his descendants. Their peaceful separation became the beginning of two very different journeys.
