3D sense of the lay of the land

Get a feel for the lay of the land:

—Ararat Mountains, where Noah’s boat ran aground. The Bible doesn’t say it was Mount Ararat.
—Judean hills where Joshua and the Israelites found most of their battles for the Promised Land. They avoided the plains, where their enemies with armored chariots had the advantage over Israel’s foot soldiers.
—Jesus’ 20-mile climb from Jericho and the Jordan River Valley upward half a mile high, to the crest of the Mount of Olives, overlooking Jerusalem.
—One surprise for some readers is the Jesus Triangle, a plug of ground between three cities. It’s where Jesus spent most of his ministry time. A person can walk that entire triangle in a single day. Type “Jesus triangle” to see it.

Jerusalem Temple

The Jewish Temple was an important part of Jewish worship for a really long time. King Solomon built it around 3,000 years ago. He used valuable materials like gold, bronze, and other expensive material. He imported cedars of Lebanon, floated down as rafts on the ocean.

Getting close to God

The Temple was where Jewish people went to be close to God. It had different areas, like an outside place (courtyard) and two inside rooms. The Holy of Holies was the most important part of the Temple. It was where the Ark of the Covenant was kept, which had the Ten Commandments inside. The Ark was really special because it meant that God was also present in the Temple.

Sacrificing to God

People would have religious ceremonies and holidays at the Temple. They'd do things like give offerings,  make sacrifices, and teach the people about Jewish laws and traditions. These helped people stay close to God.

Destroyed twice

Unfortunately, invaders destroyed the Temple twice. The Babylonians trashed it in 586 BC, but the Jews rebuilt it even better, with the help of King Herod the Great.  But the Romans destroyed it too, in 70 AD...once and for all. This was a big deal for Jewish people because their religion revolved around what happened there. But the "there" wasn't there anymore. Never has been. They had to find another way to worship God. That's possibly how synagogues developed.
Even though the Temple doesn't exist anymore, it's still an important part of Jewish culture and history. People still talk about it and remember it as a symbol of their faith. The Temple was the center of Jewish worship and identity for a long time, and its legacy continues to inspire people of different religions today.
Some Jews even hope to rebuild it. But the Temple Mount is now occupied by a 1,400-year-old iconic landmark that is now the most visual symbol of Jerusalem. It's the Dome of the Rock, a Muslim shrine where Islamic people go to pray every day.

Jordan River

The Jordan River and the river valley are important locations in both the Old and New Testaments. It's especially important to the Jewish and Christian people.

Geography of the Jordan

The river is a river in the Middle East that starts north, in the mountains of Lebanon. It flows into the Dead Sea. Bible writers talk about it many times. They report it in the story of Joshua, who led the Israelites across the Jordan into Canaan. John the Baptist baptized Jesus in the Jordan. The Jordan River valley is a lush green area that is surrounded by desert. It's famous for its fertile land and beautiful scenery. Bible writers called it the land of milk and honey. This is because God told Moses that he would lead the Israelites to a land "where milk and honey flow like rivers" (Exodus 3:8, Casual English Bible).

The Jordan River valley is home to other important biblical sites, including Jericho. That's the city famous for its walls that came tumbling down in Joshua's time. The northern river valley is also home to the Mount of Beatitudes, where Jesus gave the Sermon on the Mount. And in that same valley, on the Sea of Galilee, is where the Bible writers report that Jesus walked on water and calmed the storm. The Casual English Bible describes the river as "the most famous river in the Bible." It says that when Joshua led the Israelites across the river and into the Promised Land "walking in the water of the Jordan River symbolized the people stepping out in faith and trusting God to keep his promise." The Bible says God stopped the Jordan River during flood sea, which allowed the Israelites to cross. Israelites are the ancient ancestors of today's Jewish people.

Revelation 21:1-23, Casual English Bible

NEW WORLD WITHOUT TEARS

1I saw a new heaven and earth. The first heaven and earth were gone.  So was the sea.  2I saw the city devoted to God, New Jerusalem. God sent it floating down out of the sky. It was as ready as a bride dressed in her beautiful best—all for her husband. 3In a loud voice, the one who sat on the throne said, “Look at that! God has moved in with people! He’s going to live right there with them. They’ll be his family—people devoted to him. He’ll be the head of the family—their God devoted to them. 4God will wipe away every teardrop from every eyeball. Death will be dead and gone. It’ll take with it all the pain, tears, and grief. It’ll all be gone, along with the first heaven, earth, and sea.”

GOD SPEAKS

5Someone else  sitting on a throne said, “Look! This is a makeover; I’m making everything new.” He turned to me and said, “Write that down because you can count on it. And that’s the truth.” 6Then he added. “It’s done!  I’m the A and the Z —the start and the finish. Anyone who’s thirsty can take a drink from the spring water of life.  No charge. I’m giving them my okay. 7Anyone who wins the battle wins the prize: I’ll be their God and they’ll be my child. 8But I’ll tell you what’s going to happen to the other people—those cowards, unbelievers, and lowlifes. These are people who commit murder or sex sins. Or they practice sorcery or idolatry. They’re all liars. And they’re going to burn for it. They’re going to land in the lake of fire that feeds on sulfur. That’s the Second Death.

INVITATION FROM AN ANGEL

9Then an angel came to me. He was one of the seven who dumped the seven bowls of disaster on the world. He said, “Come with me. I’d like you to see the Lamb’s bride.” 10He took my spirit up to a mountain that was massive and high. He let me watch as the sacred city of Jerusalem descended out of heaven, sent down by God. 11The city glowed with the glory of God’s radiance. It shined like a jewel, like a jasper stone polished clear as crystal.

BUILDER’S GRADE IN NEW JERUSALEM

12Walls framed the city. These walls were enormous and high. They had a dozen gates, each with its own angel. Inscribed on every gate was the name of one of the 12 tribes of Israel.  13There were three gates on each of the city’s four sides—north, south, east, and west. 14City walls sat on a dozen stone foundations. Each foundation carried the name of one of the Lamb’s 12 apostles. 15The angel brought a gold measuring stick to measure the city, the gates, and the wall. 16The city was shaped like a cube, and the angel measured it with the rod. New Jerusalem is 1,380 miles (2,220 km) long and wide. It’s also 1,380 miles (2,220 km) high. 17The angel measured the wall at 72 yards (66 m) thick. That’s according to the measuring system used by both humans and angels. They use the same system: cubits. 18City walls were crafted from jasper. The city itself was built of gold, clear as glass. 19Foundation stones under the walls were embedded with a dozen different jewels: jasper, sapphire, agate, emerald, 20onyx, carnelian, chrysolite, beryl, topaz, chrysoprase, jacinth, amethyst. 21The dozen gates were made of pearl—each gate cut from a single massive pearl. The streets were paved in gold, clear as glass.

NEW JERUSALEM’S ENERGY SOURCE

22I looked around and I didn’t see a temple anywhere in the city. They don’t need a place to worship God. He’s already there. The Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple. 23New Jerusalem doesn’t have a sun or a moon. Doesn’t need them. God himself lights the city. The Lamb of God is the light. 24The light of this city will guide people everywhere, in countries all over the earth. World leaders will come, in dignity and honor. 25The gates will never close. No need. It’s always daytime. No such thing as nighttime.

A mysterious writer named John was exiled on Patmos, an island off the coast of Turkey, about 50 miles (80 km) west of Ephesus.  There, he wrote about his visions of what was going to happen to the world he knew, which was the Mediterranean world: "When the second angel blew his trumpet, I saw something on fire. It was as big as a mountain, and it was thrown down to the earth. It crashed into the sea, turning a third of earth’s water into blood. It killed a third of all sea life and destroyed a third of all ships at sea. When the third angel blew his trumpet, I saw a massive star, blazing like a torch, fall to earth. It destroyed a third of the freshwater rivers and underground springs. The star’s name was Wormwood.
