Bible writers describe the boundaries of the Promised Land in several different ways. That is why Bible maps do not always draw the same border around the land promised to Abraham and his descendants.
Genesis 15:18 describes a broad territory extending from the river of Egypt to the Euphrates River. Exodus 23:31 gives another sweeping description, from the sea in the south to the Mediterranean Sea and from the wilderness to the Euphrates. Numbers 34 provides more detailed boundaries for the land the tribes of Israel would inherit west of the Jordan River. Joshua 1:4 describes territory stretching from the wilderness and Lebanon to the Euphrates and the Mediterranean.
These descriptions are related, but they do not all refer to precisely the same thing. Some describe land God promised, some describe land assigned to the tribes, and others reflect territory Israel controlled at different times.
