Babylon Empire

Babylon captures Middle East

Babylon's Empire swallowed up much of what is now the Middle East. It controlled much of what is now Iraq, Syria, Judah, and Egypt, with parts of Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

Babylon's most famous king

King Nebuchadnezzar II ruled the Babylonian Empire from 605 to 562 BCE, and he is one of the most famous kings in history. Under his leadership, Babylon became a powerful and influential city in the ancient world. He transformed the city into a thriving hub of culture, trade, and architecture. People from all over came to see its stunning sights, like the famous Hanging Gardens, which some say qualify as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Growth through war

Nebuchadnezzar expanded his empire through military conquests. He led successful campaigns against neighboring territories, including the Kingdom of Judah. In 586 BCE, he seized Jerusalem, destroyed the First Temple, and took many Israelites captive to Babylon. This event marked a significant moment in Jewish history known as the Babylonian Exile. Despite being a conqueror, Nebuchadnezzar’s reign brought a mix of prosperity and turmoil to his subjects.

King of builders

He didn’t just focus on war; he also prioritized building projects. Nebuchadnezzar rebuilt Babylon’s walls and created beautiful temples dedicated to the gods. He adorned the city with magnificent palaces and streets lined with impressive sculptures and mosaics. People from different cultures lived in Babylon, adding to its rich diversity.

When the king went mad

However, Nebuchadnezzar’s reign wasn’t all about glory. The king faced challenges, including bouts of madness, which some historians believe may have been due to stress or illness. Despite these struggles, his legacy endured long after his death. The Babylonian Empire continued to thrive before eventually falling to the Persian Empire.
