Hebrews on the Move

When the drought hit hard across Canaan, the Hebrews weren’t the only ones packing up and heading for greener pastures. Word got around that Egypt still had food—lots of it. Why? Because the Nile River doesn’t care much about local rainfall. Every year it flooded like clockwork, soaking the land and turning Goshen into one giant garden while the rest of the region dried up and cracked.

So, Jacob’s family—already invited by the Egyptian prime minister, who also happened to be Jacob’s long-lost son Joseph—made the long trek south. Picture a caravan of wagons, donkeys, kids asking “Are we there yet?”, and a whole lot of dust. They crossed the Sinai wilderness, followed the safe routes along the coast and desert edges, and eventually reached the Nile Delta: a land that must have looked like paradise after years of empty fields.

Why Goshen Mattered

A Drought-Proof Refuge

Goshen sat right in the Nile Delta, the most fertile stretch of land in Egypt. While the rest of the world prayed for rain, Egypt relied on the Nile’s yearly overflow—nature’s irrigation system. Crops grew even in famine years. That made Goshen the place everyone wished they lived… and the place everyone ran to when things got rough.

Not Just the Hebrews

The Hebrews weren’t the only refugees. Traders, nomads, neighbors from Canaan, and people from all over the ancient Near East streamed into Egypt when drought struck. The map shows the common travel routes folks followed—either hugging the coast or cutting through the desert highways.

A New Home

In Goshen, Jacob’s family spread out, put down roots, and thrived. What started as a survival move became the beginning of a nation’s story—one that would eventually lead them right back out again. But for that moment in history, Goshen was their shelter, their farmland, and their lifeline.
