God orders invaders to Jerusalem
1I heard the LORD shout with thunder, “Invaders, come! Bring weapons you need to kill the people and destroy the city.”2Six armed men walked into town through the north-facing gate. [1] They walked into the Temple’s inner courtyard and stood beside the bronze altar. [2] They looked ready to kill. One of the men wore a fine linen robe and carried a writer’s case. [3]
God starts leaving the Temple
3I saw that the glorious presence of the God of Israel had left the cherub figurine that sat on top of the Box of the Law. [4] He had moved to the entrance that led into the Temple. From there, he called out orders to the man in linen with the writing case. 4God said, “Take a walk through town. When you find someone grieving and upset about all the disgustingly sinful things people are doing, mark them on the forehead.”5He told the other five, “Follow him and execute the people. Don’t show them any pity. 6Skip the people he marks. But kill everyone else, men, women, and children. Start here at the sanctuary.” The executioners started with the leaders there in front of the building.
God’s order: Kill men, women, children
7Then he told them, “Desecrate the sanctuary [5] and fill the courtyards with the dead. Kill them now.” That’s what the men did.8While those men were killing the people I was left alone. I dropped face down on the ground and cried out, “Oh Lord God! Are you going to kill all that's left of the nation of Israel as you vent this anger on Jerusalem?”
9He said, “The two kingdoms of Israel and Judah have been incredibly sinful and violent and perverse. These lands are full of bloodshed and repulsive behavior. The people justify their disgusting behavior by saying that the LORD has left this land and no longer sees what's going on. 10Well, here I am with my eyes wide open. I am not going to spare these people. I am not going to show them pity. Instead, I will hold them accountable for what they have done and punish them accordingly.”
11The man wearing linen clothing and carrying the writing case returned and said, “I did what you ordered me to do.”
