Road to Bethlehem

Mary and Joseph left Nazareth and took the road to Bethlehem. There were several routes, including some out of the way, such as along the coastland, which was flatter than other routes.

Romans ordered a census, perhaps to estimate taxes they should be able to collect. Joseph returned to Bethlehem, the hometown of his most famous ancestor, King David.

Jesus was born in Bethlehem.

This journey was about a four-day walk along the shortest caravan routes through the hilly, central part of the country, roughly 75 miles (120 km).
