Exodus to the Promised Land

Faith Enough to Walk

It was only about 250 miles (400 km) from Egypt to the promised land of Canaan. A direct route along the Mediterranean coast could have taken a couple of weeks. But according to the Bible, God had other plans. He sent the Israelites the long way around — south through the Sinai desert, across the Red Sea, and down to Mount Sinai. From there, they wandered north to the oasis at Kadesh Barnea, where they camped for years. The whole trip ended up taking 40 years.

Why so long? The short answer: they weren't ready. When Moses sent spies into Canaan, most came back terrified. The people panicked and wanted to go back to Egypt. So God told them that generation would never see the promised land. They would walk and wait until a new generation grew up — one willing to trust God and go in.

Hebrews 11:29 says, "By faith the people crossed the Red Sea as on dry land." But that was just the beginning. After the miracle at the sea came the hard part — the long, hot walk through the wilderness. No roads. No towns. No grocery stores. Just sand, rock, and the faith that God would keep them alive one more day.

This map tracks the possible route of Moses and the Israelites from Egypt through the Sinai Peninsula to Canaan. It shows the rugged terrain they crossed on foot, the sea they walked through, and the mountain where they camped. It turns the Bible's most famous road trip into something you can actually see — and it helps explain why a 250-mile journey turned into a lifetime.
