Map of Tarshish

Looking for Tarshish: The Mystery Port of the Bible

Where in the world was Tarshish?

The Bible mentions it several times, but never pins it down. It appears to have been a distant, wealthy trading destination—far enough away to represent the edge of the known world. Ships of Tarshish became a symbol of long voyages, trade, and far-reaching ambition.

One of the most famous references comes in the story of Jonah. When God told Jonah to go east to Nineveh, Jonah went the opposite direction—boarding a ship bound for Tarshish. In other words, he wasn’t just running away. He was trying to disappear to the farthest place he could imagine.

That’s what makes Tarshish so compelling.

Scholars have proposed several possible locations: southern Spain (Tartessus), the island of Sardinia, or even Carthage in North Africa. All were major trade hubs in the ancient Mediterranean, connected by long-distance sea routes.

This map helps you visualize those possibilities—turning a biblical mystery into a geographic exploration. It shows the known world of Mediterranean trade and the likely destinations ancient sailors had in mind when they spoke of Tarshish.
