Rome: Paul’s Destination
Not His Plan
When Paul wrote the letter to the Romans, he had never been to Rome. But he probably thought about it a lot. Rome was the center of the Roman world — politically, economically, and culturally. If the message of Jesus could take root there, it could spread everywhere.
This map shows the final legs of Paul’s journey to Rome, years after he wrote Romans. Instead of arriving as a free missionary, Paul came under guard, shipped across the Mediterranean and then walked inland to the city where he would stand trial. The irony is hard to miss: Paul planned to come freely, maybe even use Rome as a launching point toward Spain. Instead, God brought him to Rome in chains — and still used him powerfully.
Rome in Paul’s Day
Rome was massive, crowded, and loud. It was the headquarters of the Roman Empire, filled with soldiers, courts, merchants, and people from every corner of the Mediterranean world. Paul would eventually live there under house arrest, preaching, teaching, and writing letters that still shape Christianity today.
This map helps you see how Paul actually arrived, the roads he walked, and the geography behind Romans — a letter written in hope, before suffering entered the picture.
