Map Gehenna Valley

Gehenna Valley — Jesus’ Warning You Could See

This map brings one of Jesus’ most striking images into focus: Gehenna, the valley just outside Jerusalem. When Jesus used this word, he wasn’t speaking abstractly. He was pointing to a real place his listeners could see—a steep, barren valley with a dark reputation.

In Matthew 5, during the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus used Gehenna to show the seriousness of sin and the cost of ignoring it. This map grounds that teaching in real geography, showing exactly where this valley sits in relation to Jerusalem and the surrounding ridges.

From Real Place to Powerful Image

Gehenna, also known as the Valley of Hinnom, lies just south and west of Jerusalem. Over time, it became associated with judgment, destruction, and everything people wanted to avoid. By Jesus’ day, it had become a vivid picture of ruin.

Standing above the city and looking down into that valley, Jesus’ audience would have immediately understood the force of his words. This map helps modern readers see that same view—and feel that same impact.
