SHECHEM – GERIZIM – EBAL
Some Bible maps, like the 3D-style map of Shechem and the mountains of Gerizim and Ebal, look a bit like NASA images that are so gorgeous people print them, frame them, and hang them on their walls.
So that's what we're doing with selected maps. Some folks already have these maps hanging in their houses.

Abraham was here
Some of the Bible's biggest stories took place in Shechem, below the hills of Gerizim and Ebal. These are places still sacred to Jews, Samaritans, Christians, and Muslims.

Joshua and Israelites promise God
"Everyone assembled in the valley between Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal. Israel’s leaders—elders, officials, and judges—stood on both sides of the Box of the Law, with the priests who carried it. Everyone was there, whether Israelite or others living among them. Half stood by Mount Gerizim. The other half stood by Mount Ebal. Moses had told them to do this. Moses said they should start by reading the blessings that God promised them for following the law. After that they read the painful consequences of breaking the law. These are preserved in the Law Book. Joshua read out loud every law Moses ever taught. All the people were there, including the women, children, and outsiders living among the Israelites" "Joshua 8:33-35).
Israel's capital
When Israel split in two, the northern Jewish kingdom of Israel selected Shechem as it's capital. The southern kingdom of Judah kept Jerusalem.
Nablus today
Shechem is a mound of ruins in the Palestinian West Bank city of Nablus, occupied by Israelis. Jews no longer have a Temple, so they no longer sacrifice animals to God. But Samaritans do, on Mount Gerizim every Passover Season. That's about the same time as the Christian Easter.
