Book 5, Psalms 107-150
God does wonderful things for people
Thanks for the rescue
1The, LORD [1] is good to us.Thank him for it.
He will never run out of mercy.
2The people he rescued can confirm it,
The folks he saved from their enemies.
3He collected them scattered from around the world,
East to west and north to south.
Broken spirits call to God
4They wandered through deserts and barren lands.Where they couldn’t find a city to call home.
5Hungry and thirsty,
Their spirits were broken,
6In deep trouble they prayed
And the LORD rescued them.
7He pointed them down the trail
And led them to a city full of people.
8May they thank the LORD for his compassion,
And for the wonderful things he does for humanity.
9He quenches the thirst of the withering spirit.
He fills the starving soul with healthy food.
Praying from prison
10Some lived in misery,In the darkness of a prison cell,
Chained to the shadow of death.
11They suffered because
They turned against God
And rejected his plans for them.
12So he used hard labor to teach them humility,
In a place where they fell and no one helped.
13In deep trouble they prayed to the LORD
And he rescued them from their misery.
14He freed them from their dark prisons,
And broke the chains to the shadow of death.
15May they thank the LORD for his compassion,
And for the wonderful things he does for humanity.
16He breaks open the bronze gates of a city,
And he plucks apart iron bars of defense.
Too sick to eat, but not to pray
17Some foolish people, evil at heart,Turned against God and paid the price.
18They got too sick to eat,
Couldn’t stand the sight of food.
In time, they were knocking on death’s door.
19But they prayed to the LORD about their troubles
And he rescued them from a world of hurt.
20With a word, he healed them.
He saved their lives.
21May they thank the LORD for his compassion,
And for the wonderful things he does for humanity.
22And may they offer sacrifices to thank him,
While singing songs that praise him,
And telling others about what he has done.
Sailing the seas with God
23Merchants who sail the seasAnd take their products across the ocean
24Have seen the power of the LORD
And his wonders upon the deep.
25With a breath he created a wind
That churned the waves of the sea.
26They curled high into mountains
And splashed hard to the depths,
And purged all courage from the travelers.
27They stumbled around and staggered
Like drunks on a ship in a storm,
With nowhere to go, but trying to get there.
28So they prayed to the LORD about their troubles
And he rescued them from danger.
29He stopped the storm
By hushing the waves to sleep.
30The people where happy to see
That the waves fell quiet and calm.
The LORD escorted them on their way
To the harbor where they wanted to go.
31May they thank the LORD for his compassion,
And for the wonderful things he does for humanity.
32They should praise him in public worship services
And praise him at meetings with leaders.
He turns a river into a gulch
33He can turn a river into a wadi [2] gulch.And a freshwater spring into a dust plug.
34He can turn farms into salt flats
As punishment for the wicked who live there.
35But he can also turn a desert into an oasis pool
And baked dirt into fountains of freshwater springs.
36That’s where he takes the starving, to live.
So they’ll have a city to call their own.
37They’ll plant crops and vineyards
And collect a bumper harvest.
38He blesses them with lots of kids
And he keeps the livestock healthy and growing.
39All this he does after they suffered
Oppression, misery, and grief.
40But he holds the leaders accountable
By leaving them lost in the badlands.
41Yet people in need he spares from suffering.
And he gives them a family as big as a flock.
41God-loving people see this with delight.
But unjust people keep their mouths shut.
43Folks with a good head on their shoulders are taking notes.
They’re going to remember the relentless love of the LORD.
