Ezekiel 1

Ezekiel sees four winged creatures

God appears in a storm

1I saw God in visions while I lived by the Chebar Canal [1] in Babylon, with Jewish exiles deported [2] from Israel. The visions started in the summer when I was 30 years old. [3] The sky opened above me. 2It was the fifth day of the month, and King Jehoiachin [4] was five years into his exile. [5]

3The LORD had a message for me, a priest named Ezekiel. I’m the son of Buzi, and an exile living by Chebar Canal in the land of Babylon. The LORD was with me there.

4I watched a windy storm blow in from the north. It came with a massive cloud that looked like it was carrying an amber fire inside its churning billows. Lightening flashed constantly around it and through it.

Ezekiel sees four-faced creatures

5At the center of this storm, I saw four creatures that resembled humans. But they weren’t human. 6Each creature had four faces and two sets of wings. 7They had straight, stick-like legs and feet that looked like cattle hooves. [6] These creatures shined like polished bronze. 8Under each set of wings were human hands and arms. 9The creatures stood beside each other, wings touching. Each one moved forward, without turning left or right.

10Each creature had a blockhead of four faces: human, lion, ox, and eagle. 11That's what their faces looked like. With their four wings each, they used two wings to cover their bodies. They each stretched out their other two wings. When they did that, the wings of each creature touched the wingtips of those beside them.

Spirit moves the creatures and wheels

12Each creature moved in a straight line, guided by God’s Spirit. [7] They never deviated from the direction that the Spirit wanted to go.

These creatures glowed like burning coals in the night. The light pulsated, like a torch passing from one to the other, with sparks flying.
14The creatures danced about, like flashes of lightning.

15I saw four wheels on earth, one for each of the creatures. 16The wheels seemed to be made from the shiny gemstone beryl. [8] All four looked alike. And they looked like a wheel inside a wheel. [9]

Spirit creatures on the move

17This allowed the creatures to move in any direction they wanted without having to turn the wheels in a different direction. 18The wheels were tall and as they moved they sparkled like shining eyes. [10]

19When the creatures moved, the wheels rolled along with them. And when the creatures levitated off the earth, the wheels followed them upward. 20Where the creatures went, the wheels followed because the living Spirit of God rolled along inside the wheels, too. 21When one moved, they all moved. When one stopped, they all stopped. When they took off into the air, they all rose. And the wheels rose with them for the spirit lived within the wheels.

Crystal crowns

22They had something above their head sparkling like brilliant crystal. 23Below the crystal, they traveled with two wings covering the bodies and two wings extended.

24When they moved, their wings thundered like a waterfall, or a marching army. It sounded like the voice of God Almighty. When they stopped moving, they dropped those thundering wings. 25When they lowered their wings, I heard a voice from above the creatures and the sparkling crystal.

The glowing person on a throne

26There, I saw what looked like a human sitting on a gemstone sapphire throne. 27The person was glowing from head to toe like amber fire in darkness. It was a spectacular sight.

28The splendor of the scene was like a bright rainbow breaking through a rainy day. Colors everywhere. It all reflected from the glory of the LORD. [11] When it hit me, and I realized what I was seeing, I dropped face down on the ground. Then someone started to talk.
