Assyrian Empire 750 BC
On the verge of overrunning Middle East
Assyria, based in what is now northern Iraq, began to push west, bullying city-state kingdoms into paying them taxes or tribute. They would conquer Syria first and kill the king in Damascus. Then, in 722 BC, they would erase Israel from the world map and deport the Jewish survivors. They would try to destroy Jerusalem, but didn't make it past the walls before something mysterious drove them away, possibly a bubonic-like plague, some scholars theorize.Where to find more Bible maps

Zerubbabel and Sheshbazzar, prince of Judah, lead 50,000 Jews home, beginning in 538 BC. With a Persian military escort, they took a longer and safer route, following water sources.
Almost a century after the first Jews returned to Israel, Ezra led a group. Ezra took the shorter route, with a long walk through a dangerous part of the Arabian Desert.
Nehemiah came last and furthest, from Persia’s capital of Susa. He repaired Jerusalem’s walls.

9 Listen to me you rulers of Jacob’s people,
You leaders of Israel
You crooks who poison justice,
And cheat fairness.
10 You have built Jerusalem
In the blood of my people.
You have built my sacred Zion[2]
On the solid rock of evil.
11 Your judges settle cases for a bribe.
Priests will teach you if you pay.
Prophets will advise you for a fee.
Yet they all have the nerve
To invoke God’s support.
They say,
“Absolutely, the LORD is with us
Nobody’s going to hurt us.”
12 Tell it to Jerusalem
When it’s a plowed field.
This city is coming down,
Collapsing into a pile of rocky ruins.
The stately Temple Mount, abandoned,
Will grow into a wooded hilltop.
Micah 3:9-12

A contender for the greatest show of faith on earth is a prophet most Christians have probably never heard about, Habakkuk
Aside from Jesus, who expressed his faith by dying on a cross, the faith of Habakkuk, this little-known prophet, showed what he was made of when he found out his Jewish nation was about to get wiped off the map.
Most Christians never read what he said, even though his words lit the spark that produced the Protestant movement.
When he got the news that Jerusalem would fall, he shook with fear, went into isolation, and grew depressed. But when he came up for air, the words he spoke anchored him God. Christians who know the words he spoke remember them, at least well enough to put into their own words and apply them to tough times they face.
