Romans destroy the Temple
In AD 66, Jews rebelled against the Roman Empire occupation of the Jewish homeland. Jews killed or drove out Roman soldiers stationed in the region.
1. Spring AD 67: Vespasian and son Titus invade Galilee with 60,000 soldiers intent on retaking the Jewish homeland.
2. City of Sepphoris surrenders.
3. City of Jotapata falls. Jewish commander of the northern front, Josephus, is captured. Galilee soon falls.
4. Vespasian makes Caesarea his headquarters, and winters there.
5. June 69: Nero kills himself. Vespasian is named emperor and leaves for Rome. His son Titus takes over command.
6. May 70: Titus lays siege to Jerusalem. With siege towers, catapults, and battering rams, the Romans break through the walls. By end of August the city and Temple are destroyed.
7. May 73: Romans finish a ramp to the top of the last Jewish holdout: Masada, a butte 1,300 feet high (400 meters). Rebels commit mass suicide rather than surrender.
